Camila Torres-Castro (she/ella) is a writer, scholar, and DJ. She obtained her PhD from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Texas at Austin, where she authored a dissertation on the affective politics of sound in contemporary Mexican film. Her research is situated at the intersection of film and sound in the Neoliberal era. Camila has presented her work at many conferences around the world including the Latin American Studies Association, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, and the Juan-Bruce Novoa Mexican Studies Conference. She has one forthcoming article titled "Lejos de Veracruz: Of Urban (Sound)Scapes and Fallen Idols in Güeros (2014)," set to be published during fall 2022 in the journal Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture from UC Press. Outside of academia, Camila is a vinyl collector and DJ. In Austin, TX, she was a member of Chulita Vinyl Club, an all-women/gender-non-conforming/non-binary DJ collective that centers community and placemaking as resistance.
