Since receiving his PhD from the University of Warwick, Benjamin Berger has taught philosophy at a number of institutions, most recently at Haverford College. He thinks that one of the most powerful ways that each of us can become aware of our unique philosophical perspective is by engaging with texts from the history of philosophy, where we find ideas that, at first blush, appear very different from our own. According to Ben, it is in discovering ideas we love in those texts—as well as ideas we fundamentally oppose—that we acquire a more refined understanding of the individuals we are.
Ben’s research focuses on ambitious metaphysical projects from the 19th century that seek to clarify the place of humanity in the world, with special attention paid to discussions of nature, life, and the environment. He welcomes conversation with students about any and all things philosophical.
