Garry Apgar majored in French at Washington & Lee University. After graduation, he served in Vietnam as a Marine Corps officer from April 1968 to July 1970. Prior to receiving advanced degrees from the Université de Paris IV (Sorbonne) and Yale (in art history), from 1972 to 1976 he was a staff artist and political cartoonist on the Roanoke Times in Virginia and a free-lance cartoonist and writer in Paris. He has taught a variety of topics in art history, focusing primarily on European art. He is a co-founder and current president of the non-profit Voltaire Society of America, Inc.
