7.05 Bereavement

Effective Date: September 1, 2013 (revised)

Purpose:

Bereavement pay is intended to compensate administrative employees for working time lost in connection with the death, and attendance at the funeral, of immediate family members.

Procedure:

Bereavement pay is provided to administrative employees with an FTE of .5 or greater. Eligible employees may take bereavement time for immediate family, defined as spouse, parent, child, sister, brother, grandparent, father-in-law, and mother-in-law.

The length of the leave depends upon the circumstances, but up to three working days are granted if needed.

On occasion, permission to attend services in the area for deceased colleagues and other close relatives or friends is made at the discretion of the supervisor. In such cases, employees may be paid up to three hours to attend a local service without deductions from personal or vacation balances. For other situations, personal or vacation time can be used.

If an employee is on vacation and an immediate family member dies, bereavement leave off will be provided in lieu of vacation.

An employee on an unpaid leave of absence is not entitled to bereavement leave pay.
