Course Description:
The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the multi-faced transformation of Shanghai in post-reform China, especially after 1990 through both rigorous learning (lectures, reading, and discussion) in the classroom and rich field experience in the city. The course requires fieldwork in groups of 3-4 students who will follow the lectures and discussions to engage in and complete fieldwork requirements. The course also takes students to Taipei (Taiwan) in the fall semester and Hong Kong in the spring semester for a one-week comparative traveling investigation into two other world-class cities in what is known as the Greater China region. |
