Course Description:
An examination of the literature, theology, and history of both the Old and New Testaments, this course will explore the religious and social contexts that produced biblical literature. As the course moves from Abraham to David and Jesus to Paul, students will study how the Ancient Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman environments helped to shape the diverse and often conflicting perspectives that ricochet throughout the canon—chosenness in Genesis, election in the books of Samuel, and sonship in the Gospels. While particular emphasis will be placed on the development of these ideas in the biblical periods, attention will also fall to the creative and varied ways that these key concepts have been received in later Jewish and Christian traditions. |
