Course Description:
The course materials are mainly Japanese manga and anime. We will look at them as media through which various cultural elements such as historical figures and events and other literary works and characters are construed, represented, and sometimes drastically changed. Thus, students are first expected to learn how manga and anime use allusions and references to different cultural traditions to develop their stories and characters. By doing so, they will create an intellectual platform to start analyzing the processes of creators' adaptations. The final project will be writing essays that show students' critical engagements with diverse cultural elements in manga and anime.
