Course Description:
What's the first story you remember hearing, the first book you remember reading? This course takes you back to the kinds of stories you were first exposed to as a child and asks you to reflect afresh on what makes them pleasurable, what drives them, and why they endure. Together, we'll read fairy tales from all around the world and novels by a range of contemporary authors that draw on fairy tale themes. We'll also read scholarly works to kickstart our conversations and model close reading and critical writing skills as we build and revise scholarly essays. Students will also work on creative projects using a range of digital media: you'll have the opportunity, at the end of the course, to produce your own fairy tale-inspired text.
