Course Description:
The course offers an immersive introduction to canonical works of Japanese cinema and literature and highlights the work of "the Three Japanese Giants" - Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Yasujiro Ozu - the three classical Japanese auteurs who were discovered by global cinephiles in 1950s and remain extra-massive for any self-respecting lover of film today. The course also engages with a variety of post-classical Japanese films and involves close reading of important texts of Japanese literature. This course is research and writing intensive, and a significant proportion of the course grade depends on creative writing exercises that entail responsible and timely collaboration with your peers. The course has a mandatory weekly evening screening. This course is open to senior English majors only. |
