Course Description:
North American clothing and textile practices have long engaged in global networks. Our course will chart clothing’s centrality in the formation of American social, political, and economic identities and structures. By focusing on moments of change and crisis, we will explore the fashioning of transnational citizenship. Our topics will include: clothing as protest, transformable garments as humanitarian aid, wearable technology, fast fashion and global economies, and the (de)coding of race, gender, sexuality, class, and nation in clothes.
