Course Description:
We will begin with Gogol's Ukranian stories ("Ivan Shponka and his Aunt," "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Argued with Ivan Nikiforovich"). The Petersburg tales ("Diary of a Madman," "Nevsky Prospect," "The Overcoat") will be particularly exciting. We will also read Gogol's plays "The Inspector General" and "Marriage" as well as his great novel "Dead Souls." Attention will be paid to Gogol's biography, especially given that he wrote a number of these Russian classics in Rome. NOTE: Fluency in Russian is required for enrollment.
