Course Description:
This course will examine the work of a number of Roman philosophers during the period of roughly 50 BCE - 525 CE. Through reading the works of such authors as Lucretius, Cicero, Seneca, Augustine and Boethius, we will become familiar with various ancient Roman schools of thought such as Stoicism and Skepticism, with a particular focus on their competing accounts of the happy life. We shall also consider how the character of philosophy changed and evolved with the introduction of Christianity into the Roman world. |
