Professor Langwerden (he/him) received his doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour at the Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. For five years, he worked in public health at the Community-Based Research Institute (CBRI) at Florida International University. Before coming to Trinity College, Professor Langwerden completed a clinical postdoc at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CARD) at Boston University.

Professor Langwerden is interested in the broader question: how do environmental-level factors (e.g., community and culture) and individual-level factors (e.g., identities) influence mental health outcomes (e.g., anxiety and substance use)? He hopes to study these factors to shape prevention and early intervention efforts for anxiety, depression, and substance use, particularly among underserved populations. Professor Langwerden is also interested in the assessment of psychopathology and personality; as well as dimensional perspectives on psychopathology.

In his teaching, Professor Langwerden aims to foster enthusiasm not just for psychology as a science, but for science broadly, other fields of study (e.g., public health, sociology, medicine) and while taking an interdisciplinary approach. His goal is to encourage students to infuse their interests into their work, while also encouraging students to think critically about (psychological) issues and research.
