Anthony M. Messina is the John R. Reitemeyer Professor, Emeritus of Political Science. His research primarily focuses on the politics of ethnicity and immigration within contemporary Europe. He has authored Race and Party Competition in Britain (1989) and The Logics and Politics of Post-World War II Migration to Western Europe (2007), and edited or co-edited Ethnic and Racial Minorities in the Advanced Industrial Democracies (1992), West European Immigration and Immigrant Policy in the New Century (2002), The Migration Reader (2006), The Year of the Euro (2006), Europe's Contending Identities: Supranationalism, Ethnoregionalism, Religion, and New Nationalism (2014), and The Politics of New Immigrant Destinations: Transatlantic Perspectives (2017). His latest, co-authored book, Immigration, Security, and the Liberal State: The Politics of Migration Regulation in Europe and the United States, is published by Cambridge University Press (2024).
Before arriving at Trinity, Professor Messina taught at Tufts University and the University of Notre Dame, the latter which recognized him with the Kaneb distinguished teaching award. His courses aspire to expose students to sophisticated, yet accessible, analyses of contemporary political problems and questions.
