Richard Hazelton began teaching and coaching at Trinity in1974. For eight years, he was an Assistant Professor, Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Track, and an Assistant Football Coach. In 1982 he became the Chair of Physical Education and the Director of Athletics, and in 1989 became a Full Professor. He retired in 2010. Hazelton's philosophy of sport mirrors the NCAA Division III philosophy, that is, to establish an environment that creates an ethical and competitive sports program which is an important part of the student’s academic experience. The sports program should be coupled with active and enthusiastic physical education, intramural, and recreation programs. Trinity is a member of the highly regarded academic and athletic conference--NESCAC. This relationship has provided Trinity teams with competitive contests. The significant events Hazelton was involved with were hiring an excellent group of teachers/coaches and staff and an intensive improvement of the athletic facilities. All this created an atmosphere for students to have successful physical education, athletics, intramural, and recreation programs. |
