Professor Andrew Gold came to Trinity College in 1971 after teaching at Miami of Ohio and a three-year stint in the administration of America’s first African-American mayor in America.  He became a member of the Economics Department in order to create and direct an interdisciplinary Urban and Environmental Studies Program and, with Ivan Backer, a formalization of Trinity’s internship program.  In 1989, he transformed the Urban & Environmental Studies program into the Public Policy Studies Program on both the undergraduate and graduate level with cooperative programs with UConn Law School, and a legal Studies Minor that he coordinated until 1993.  Professor Gold’s interests were focused on the microeconomics of race, cities, law, and government.  He ended his career as Chair of the Economics Department from 1999-2005.  As a resident and citizen of Hartford, he chaired both the City and Regional Planning Commissions and continues that interest in retirement in New York at the NY Museum of Tolerance.  The College enjoys a grant given jointly with Professor Dori Katz toward that end.
