Sarah White has been an attorney at the Connecticut Fair Housing Center since 2012, where she works as a movement lawyer supporting tenant unions and community groups to address unsafe conditions in housing and promote state and local policies that protect tenants. She trains local Fair Rent Commissions, co-led the successful grassroots campaign that won a Right to Counsel for Tenants in Connecticut, helped organize some of the first contemporary tenant unions in Connecticut, and works on the ongoing campaign to expand Just Cause eviction protections and cap rent increases. She previously represented homeowners in foreclosure and brought affirmative cases against mortgage servicers for unfair consumer practices, including breaking-into borrowers' homes and abusing elderly reverse mortgage borrowers. Prior to joining the Center, she worked at a legal aid organization in rural Tennessee, where she represented tenants and assisted immigrant-led community organizing against deportations. She is the past co-chair of the Housing & Homelessness Committee of the National Lawyers Guild and has been involved in community organizing for more than 15 years. |
