Leniqueca Welcome is an urban anthropologist, a Caribbean scholar, and a designer. She obtained her PhD in cultural anthropology with a certificate in urban studies and a certificate in experimental ethnography from the University of Pennsylvania. She also holds a Bachelor of Architecture for the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and she practiced as an architect in Trinidad and Tobago. Her current research in the Caribbean explores the entangled processes of racialization and criminalization, state and urban violence, and fights for liberation. Her work combines more traditional ethnographic methods with photography and collaging. Her scholarship and teaching are informed by Black and decolonial feminist theory. She works to foster reciprocal relations of learning and pedagogy rooted in care in her classrooms. She also advocates that scholarship should always be more than philosophical exploration, it should be aimed at material transformation.
