Mark Mirko is a Hartford Courant photojournalist whose range of work spans three decades and more than a dozen countries. His assignments have included covering international conflict, regional peace-building, national and international leaders as well as national and international sports championships. Mark initiated the creation the Eye Contact, the online journal of the The Hartford Courant photography department, where he produced a photography column exploring the potential of documenting peace as an alternative to documenting war. He has edited, designed and produced two books The Year We Made Eye Contact, a compilation of posts from Eye Contact’s first year, and Passing Time, a personal project from two days of birth and death within his family. Mark is a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities and in 2003 was awarded the year-long Knight Fellowship in Newsroom Graphics Management and New Media Technologies at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication.

Drawing on his daily assignments as a working photojournalist, Mark’s teaching style is collaborative and affirming where students are encouraged to discuss, learn and apply lessons toward their own assignments from his varied daily journalistic experiences.
