Chris Armen began his academic career later than most, arriving at Dartmouth College as a PhD candidate at the age of 36.  His initial interests were in AI, but he was drawn to the problem-solving challenges of the design and analysis of algorithms. He completed his PhD in 1996, with a thesis that applied the techniques of approximation algorithms to a central problem in Computational Biology. During his time at Dartmouth, he had the opportunity to teach three courses, and there he discovered his love of teaching.  Over the next nine years, he taught at the University of Hartford, Trinity College, and Amherst College before returning to a position in industry.

Dr. Armen is excited to return to Trinity, where he experienced his most rewarding years of teaching.  He’s looking forward to the variety of courses that he’ll be able to teach, and he’s intrigued by the opportunity to re-visit some of his AI and algorithmic interests from a contemporary perspective.
