Professor Picker earned his S.B. (1963) and Ph.D. (1966) in physics at M.I.T. Following postdoctoral fellowships and appointments at Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Niels Bohr Institute (Copenhagen), Princeton, and the University of Maryland, he came to Trinity in 1971. He thinks of physics as an engaging duel of wits with the universe (and with other physicists) in which a running score is tallied in the form of theoretical predictions versus experimental data. To keep track of things, it is essential to organize one's thoughts. Amusements in the form of new ideas, new ways of looking at old ideas, and a thorough intellectual workout are its rewards.
